En Jujuy, el fenómeno llamado transición demográfica –disminución de muertes y de nacimientos, prolongación de la vida- se dio tardíamente respecto de otras regiones del país. Durante el siglo XX sus índices de mortalidad fueron los más elevados de la Argentina, pero con acentuada tendencia a la disminución a partir de la década de 1940. El artículo analiza la evolución y distribución de los mismos en el curso del siglo dentro del contexto de las políticas estatales sociales y económicas. Para ello se recurre a las estadísticas vitales y censos y a estudios de cientistas sociales sobre la región.

 

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the evolution and distribution of the rates of mortality in Jujuy during the 20th century in the context of the state politics. In Jujuy, the call demographic transition -deaths and births indices decrease- was given late regarding other regions of the country. During the 20th century, its rates of mortality were the highest of Argentina, but with down tendency from 1940; at the end of this period these indices continued the same dynamics of the remainder of the country. It was arranged vital statistics, censuses, and also social investigations.
