El presente artículo resalta la importancia del conocimiento y el capital humano para el crecimiento económico y la de los valores y el capital social para el desarrollo local. Propone también algunos roles y desafíos de la Universidad en el contexto del desarrollo local referifos a la economía y a la sociedad. Inicialmente trata de la relación del conocimiento y del capital humano con el desarrollo de la economía. En segunda instancia y referido a la influencia de la Universidad sobre el crecimiento económico, aborda aspectos de calidad y oferta educativa, de articulación con el mercado laboral y productivo regional como así también cuestiones relacionadas con las características propias de los territorios.Por último, plantea que el desarrollo local es un proceso que depende fuertemente de los valores y del capital social y en ese contexto, los desafíos de la Universidad consisten en lograr una formación vinculada al territorio, alcanzar una mayor relación con el sector productivo, fortalecer el capital social y generar valores y capacidades que favorezcan la emergencia del desarrollo local. La Universidad juega un rol importante no sólo para el crecimiento económico, sino también como promotor del desarrollo local en la medida que es un agente de promoción cultural, de integración, de socialización y de transmisión de valores y actitudes.

ABSTRACT
This article highlights the importance of knowledge and human capital for the economic development and the values and the social capital for the local development. It also suggests some roles and challenges for the University in the context of local development referring to the economy and the society. Initially this paper discusses the link between knowledge and human capital with the economic development. Secondly concerns the influence of the University on economic growth, the quality and the offer of the education, its matches with the labour market and other aspects of the territories. Finally, the article sets out that the local development is a process that depends tremendously on the values and the social capital so, the challenges of the University are to achieve a formation linked to the territory, reach a better relationship with the productive sector, make stringer the social capital and generate values and capacities that favour the emergence of a local development. University has a very important role, not only for the economic growth but also as in promoting local development to the extent that is an agent of cultural promotion, integration, socialization and transmission of values and attitudes.
